Why you shouldn’t paddle out by the jetty…

So, yeah, uh surfing. people up here are always talking about the mysto spots that you have to hike into, or bribe the Indian, or bring a new polymer composite to Mike just to get safe parking. it’s all true. because of time constraints, i find myself always going out to Westport. the ‘peoples’ beach. it’s a large beach break that can hold a lot of people, since many of them are just learning. and what’s the first thing that many of them ‘learn’? “paddle out next to the jetty. it’s so easy, it’s like a tow-rope or something!”.

yeah. so easy. most of the time, this is a case of novice surfers talking to novice surfers. no one ever qualifies the advice with an additional, “Oh, and you better know how the fuck to PADDLE!
